PRESIDENT'S CORNER Preparations for the Orlando meetings are essentially complete. Many thanks to the Executive Committee and many other SAEA members for their contributions. Special thanks to Bob Nelson for his many hours of work in coordinating and scheduling the many sessions and activities. Please see the complete program elsewhere in this Newsletter.

I encourage you to preregister for the meetings by January 14, 2002, which will save you $25. The registration/dues form was mailed separately in mid November and is also available on our website. (Please note that the SAAS registration fee of $40 is included in the registration fees on this form.) Send the completed form to Secretary/Treasurer Bob Nelson and Walt Prevatt.

SAEA headquarters and all SAEA sessions will be located in the Hyatt-Orlando Hotel. The SAAS group rate is $129 for single or double. The hotel registration deadline is January 1, 2002.

Meeting Highlights

The initial highlight in Orlando is the SAAS general session scheduled for 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, which is co-sponsored by SAEA and Farm Foundation. SAEA Board member Steve Halbrook of Farm Foundation deserves all the credit for putting together this symposium, which is entitled "Farm Bill 2002: Issues and Possibilities for Southern Agriculture" and could not be more timely.

On Monday morning, we will kick things off with President-Elect Steve Turner's Presidential Address. The Presidential Address will be followed by an invited paper session, organized by Ralph Christy of Cornell University and entitled "Civic Community and Rural Development in the South." Our second invited paper session, to be held Tuesday morning at 10:15 a.m., is entitled "Deepening Our Understanding of the New International Trade Environment" and was organized by Lynn Kennedy, Mary Marchant, and Won Koo.

As to the heart of the meetings, participants will have 36 selected paper sessions and 18 organized symposia to choose from. Many thanks to Mary Ahearn of ERS and Darrell Bosch of Virginia Tech for coordinating the selection of papers this year, and to Steve Turner of Georgia for coordinating the selection of symposia. There will also be 17 selected posters displayed in our exhibition, plus those from our award recipients. Thanks to Donna Lee of Florida for coordinating the poster selection process.

Our Business Meeting and Awards Program will take place on Monday evening at 5:15 p.m. Please plan to participate in this opportunity to recognize our peers for their outstanding contributions. Again this year, we will feature our new Lifetime Achievement Award winners in a symposium, to be held on Tuesday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. Thanks to Hal Harris of Clemson for his leadership on all the various awards committees.

Tuesday evening, we will board buses at 5:30 p.m. and head for the CityJazz Club at Universal CityWalk, home of the Down Beat Jazz Hall of Fame, where our traditional reception will take place from 6:30 - 8:00 p.m. We will enjoy a "heavy hors d'oeuvres" dinner featuring crab cakes, beef wellington, and chicken fritters, complemented by cheese, fresh fruits and vegetables, and a cash bar. We will also be treated to a singing performance by SAEA member Eluned Jones of Virginia Tech. Discounted passes for entry into other clubs at Universal CityWalk will be available at the reception. Thanks to Lois Willett of Florida for her persistent efforts in working out the many details required in these arrangements.

Travel grants are again available to fund student participation in the meetings. The Ag Econ Quiz Bowl will kick off on Sunday morning under the guidance of the senior advisor for undergraduate student activities, David Barber of Florida. On Monday afternoon from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m., the Student Recruitment Fair will be held. Departments are encouraged to set up their displays and take advantage of this opportunity to visit with prospective graduate students. The Fair also gives undergraduate and graduate students from different institutions a chance to visit.

Well, I suppose that about does it for now. Have a wonderful Holiday Season! I look forward to seeing you in Orlando!

Bill Park
President

The SAEA Executive Committee notes with sadness the passing of Harry Mapp of Oklahoma State University, and we wish to express our sympathy to his spouse Damona Doye and others who were especially close to him. Harry received an SAEA Lifetime Achievement Award just last February, and will be sorely missed within our profession.
