PRESIDENT'S CORNER

Preparations for the meetings next year are almost complete. Only a few items remain to be done, but we are making great progress thanks to the hard work of all the members of the Executive Board listed on the left of this column, and those of you serving on the Awards, Poster Presentations, and Student Section Committees.

In this newsletter you will find the detailed program for the 1999 SAEA annual meetings. As you know, the 1999 SAEA annual meetings will take place in Memphis, Tennessee, January 30 to February 3, 1999. If you are planning to attend the meetings, I would like to strongly encourage you to PRE-REGISTER [$90.00 for membership dues and registration (SAAS and SAEA), which includes a $10 discount]. The deadline for Pre-Registration is January 1, 1999 (send it to Michael R. Dicks at the address listed on the left of this column). This would be of great help to both SAEA's Co-Secretaries/Treasurers. I should point out that the deadline for securing a hotel reservation is December 29, 1998 for the Peabody Hotel and December 30, 1998 for the Memphis Marriott Downtown Hotel. The SAEA headquarters will be located at the Memphis Marriott Downtown. Also, if you are flying to Memphis, do not forget to get a reservation with "Blues City" for transportation to and from the airport (tel. 901-522-9229 or fax 901-522-8492), as it will save you some money.

Meetings Program Highlights. As you look over the meetings program, you will find that Damona Doye, First Vice-President and Hector O. Zapata, Second Vice-President, have done a tremendous job at balancing the meetings program. Also, you will note that the format of the program has been slightly modified when compared to previous years. Specifically, we will be having one of the three Invited Paper sessions (Surviving Merger Mania: Effect of Commercial Bank and Farm Credit Mergers on Rural Credit) on Monday morning right after Mary Marchant's, President-Elect, Presidential Address entitled "Hopes and Fears: The New Trade Agreement and Southern Agriculture." The other two invited paper sessions (Risk Management Through Alternative Production Practices and Management Techniques, and Implications of the Changing Political Environment on Southern Tobacco Farms and Rural Economies) will take place on Tuesday early morning and early afternoon, respectively. Thus, more selected paper sessions and organized symposia will be taking place on Wednesday. Also, I would like to highlight the SAEA's Awards Program and Business meeting that will be taking place on Monday evening (remember that at this meeting the proposed changes to the SAEA Constitution and Bylaws will be brought up for a vote, these proposed changes are posted on my web page which you could link through SAEA's homepage). I would like to again point out that SAEA's reception will take place on Tuesday evening at the "Rendezvous" (a local restaurant famous for their ribs located across from the Peabody Hotel). Memphis natives tell me that this is the place to eat while in Memphis, and the atmosphere is quite unique. Finally, do not forget to send your papers to Hector O. Zapata postmarked by January 8, 1999.

100th anniversary of SAAS. Although it is not listed in the enclosed program, a SAAS centennial special session will be taking place on Sunday afternoon, January 31, 1999. This session will highlight SAAS' evolution during the last 100 years and will be of high quality.

JAAE News. By the time you get this newsletter, all of you should have received JAAE, Vol. 30 Supplement which contains the Journal's index. There is only one word to describe it, superb! I hope that all of you will join me in thanking Chung L. Huang and Michael E. Wetzstein, Past Co-Editors of the Journal, for their leadership in this endeavor. Thanks also to Judith L. Harrison (Technical Editor) and Steffanie N. Bowles and Teresa Byrd (Editorial Assistants) for their hard work. Also, I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the financial support provided by the American Agricultural Economics Association in this effort.

Secretary/Treasurer Position. Good news! J. Walter Prevatt and Robert G. Nelson, Department of Agricultural Economics and Rural Sociology, Auburn University, have agreed to take over as SAEA's Co-Secretary/Treasurer in 1999 when Michael R. Dicks' and Phil Kenkel's term as Co-Secretary/Treasurer ends. I hope that all of you will join me in thanking J. Walter Prevatt and Robert G. Nelson for their willingness to serve the Association in this capacity. At the same time, I ask you to join me in thanking J. Lavaughn Johnson, Head-Department of Agricultural Economics and Rural Sociology at Auburn University, for supporting J. Walter Prevatt and Robert G. Nelson's decision to serve as SAEA's Co-Secretary/ Treasurer.

Also, for the latest information on the overall meetings please access the SAAS web site at:

In closing, I would like to express my sincere appreciation to each and every one of you, for having given me the opportunity to serve the Association in this capacity for the past year. I feel fortunate to have been surrounded by a superb set of fellow officers and Executive Board members --Patricia Duffy, Mary Marchant, Damona Doye, Hector O. Zapata, Michael R. Dicks, Phil Kenkel, Chung L. Huang, Michael E. Wetzstein, Charles B. Moss, and James L. Seale, Jr. Thanks for making it a smooth ride! Thanks also to Gloria Cook and Norma Eddington for all their hard work and putting up with all of us.

Wishing you and your family the best during the holidays. See you at the meetings, and be prepared to enjoy some Southern hospitality while in Memphis.

Once again, please send me or any of the members of the Executive Board any comments and/or suggestions that you might have on how SAEA can best serve you.

Eduardo Segarra
President

Secretary/Treasurer Corner We continue to receive inquiries from members who have not received their journal. Please be reminded that if your membership has not been paid prior to the time the mailing list is sent to the printer, you will not receive the journal and will be expected to pay the back issue charge to cover the additional handling and delivery costs. In 1999 the JAAE will be mailed three times with the first issue being mailed in March. Thus, membership dues not paid by the annual meetings will most probably result in not receiving the first issue of the JAAE. Please take this opportunity to use the pre-registration/membership form found in this newsletter to pay your membership dues and/or register for the annual meetings. This form may also be used for new members or for members who have changed addresses.
